Moodymanc - Black Paint

Release Date: 26th August 2016

Format: Digital

Well Cut Records is a label from Danny Ward who along with being a major part of 2020 Soundsystem is best known to many for his productions and DJ sets under the alias of 'Dubble D' and 'Moodymanc'.

The track titled “Black Paint” became a worldwide hit for Danny Ward under his Moodymanc moniker when released on the iconic Tsuba records in 2011. Arguably a modern classic, the original release that also featured Larry Heard on remix duty remains one of Tsuba’s most popular and best known tracks.

Licensed from Tsuba, this official 2016 reworking of Black Paint comes from Lenny Middles', a native New Yorker who boasted a string of Disco hits in the early 1980s. Lenny was at one point the toast of New York’s club scene, but his DJ career hit difficulties due to his taste in fashion and insistence on wearing lycra at gigs.

Ward and Lenny had a chance meet in the early 2000’s when Danny was booked to play a gig in Philadelphia. Lenny was at the time working as a taxi driver and whilst driving Danny to his gig the pair got talking.

Years later, Lenny was granted refugee status in the UK and out of desperation contacted Danny looking for a place to stay. Recognising his distress, Danny took pity on the now aging DJ and ever since Lenny has been living in a cupboard space underneath the Ward household staircase.

Claiming the confinement helps him focus, Lenny now manages Ward’s social media accounts, downloads his promos and occasionally assists in the studio, it was one of these joint studio sessions where Lenny got his hands on the Black Paint session file.

During a quick toilet break Lenny was left alone and Danny returned 10 or 15 minutes later to discover that in a single take Lenny had reworked Black Paint. Recognising a hit, Danny quickly rendered the new version now titled “Acid Reprise” and immediately contacted Tsuba.

Tsuba realised it was a work of genius and agreed to let Danny licence the track and once again Lenny and his lycra are set to be unleashed on the world.

Keeping all of the original's charm, Lenny's rework focuses on the instantly recognisable and iconic vocal sample. Now built from the ground up, it sits on a brand new backing track. Replacing the saxophone parts with energetic clap rhythms, the updated version is lead by the dark and twisting tones of a driving acid bassline.

Poignant and raw, this techy version is a slice of timeless House both jacking and dancefloor focused.
